<a href="http://www.aheadofthecurveatmidlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/DefyGravity3.jpg.bmpI’ve just learned that the Association for Humanistic Psychology is now partnering to sponsor Carolyn Myss’s CMED Institute workshops and intensives, including Defying Gravity: The Application of Mystical Laws into Your Everyday Life. This means that if you are a psychologist, nurse, marriage and family counselor or licensed social worker in California, you can receive continuing education credits for CMED courses. That AHP is offering credits for CMED is a major milestone! Our culture is recognizing that consciousness extends beyond the ego that is so narrowly defined and limited by our biography. Carolyn’s work enriches transpersonal psychology, grounded in many wisdom traditions as well as Carl Jung’s notion of the collective unconscious, which also frames midlife as the maturing of consciousness. In CMED and Sacred Contracts, Carolyn extends Jung’s work by showing practically how archetypes influence and drive our choices, and a system for coming to know them.

Many of you value Carolyn Myss’s groundbreaking work in personal and spiritual development as much as we do, weaving together as she does, studies from Christian mysticism, archetypal psychology, energy medicine and intuition. We will continue to highlight her free media talks, CMED and Wisdom University workshops, as we have here, here, here, and here, as well as listing conferences and other upcoming events in our monthly newsletter.

Specifically, AHP is recognized by the following boards and departments to offer qualifying courses for Continuing Education Credits: California Board of Behavioral Sciences for California, LCSWs and MFTs; National Board for Certified Counselors, for Nationally Certified Counselors; and the California Board of Registered Nursing, for California.

A follow up to Avivah Wittenberg- Cox and Alison Maitland’s work on the new economic reality of women – and their power - in the workplace and as consumers. In this video they describe how the case for women in the workplace has been made – that gender balance is no longer a women’s issue but a strategic and pragmatic business issue. With the OECD, the World Bank and the UN putting up dedicated gender websites promoting the economic benefits of women in the workforce, statistics showing that 60% of the educated talent pool in the developed world are women, Goldman Sachs stating that the Eurozone alone could gain 13% of GDP by reducing the gender gap, and McKinsey reporting how corporate performance improves by having women in leadership teams, they conclude that the “gender debate” is permanently reframed. This isn’t to mention that 80% of consumer purchases in the US and two-thirds of car purchase decisions in Japan made or influenced by women, so that businesses are not only losing out on their talent pool, but also their markets.

Listen to this conversation between Wittenberg-Cox and Maitland, there’s so much of interest here. Their work is aimed at business leaders. They discuss the triple challenge of managing the ‘three discontinuities” in the 21st century: the technological revolution of the internet, the massive arrival of women into the workforce, and the issues of climate change and sustainability. They talk about training leadership to speak ‘gender-bilingually’ – and making the case that changing the way people work – especially increasing flexibility in the workplace – is an opportunity to attract a huge range of the workforce, not only women, but people approaching retirement, young people who want more choice, and men who want their roles as fathers to be better recognized.

This is the future for women.

As a veteran global fund-raiser for the Hunger Project, consultant to the Nobel Women’s Initiative to leverage the influence of women Nobel Peace Laureates to advance peace, justice, and equality, and as a trustee of the Fetzer Institute, whose mission is to foster awareness of love and forgiveness and the power of letting go, Lynne Twist has long observed how our relationship to money governs, dominates, and stresses each of our lives. Her Soul of Money Institute is dedicated to helping people find peace and sufficiency in their relationship with money. The video excerpt (below) provides an empowering perspective on how to see what’s unraveling all around us: “We’re living in a time when the economic system, the money system itself, the markets are unraveling …. It’s is a very frightening time … {but it’s important to} recognize that what is unraveling is that which has no viability. What is unraveling is that which is not sustainable. … If we can see that what’s happening is a truing, is a recalibration, it helps us see how to deal with it on a personal basis. It’s a difficult time…{and} it can also be a beautiful time. Because … we can move towards thrift rather than accumulation; we can move toward appreciating what we love rather than being afraid of what we’ve lost. We can focus our attention and intention not on what we’re losing, but on what we already have that’s so valuable and nourishing to us. And we can stop clamoring for more of what we don’t really need and take care of what we have.”

Not too much. Mostly plants.” His latest book, Food Rules: An Eater’s Manual uses these categories, but adds what he’s learned about the psychology of food and eating. “The games we play with ourselves about food, about how we confuse lots of food with lots of food experience. They’re not the same thing. You can have an intense food experience with less food. Europeans have intense food experiences but eat less food.” Pollan questions the premise that science is the only authority we have on matters having to do with food in our bodies. Long before nutrition science, culture guided us, with what’s now relegated to old wives’ tales. His goal is to resurrect that cultural wisdom, and the book is full of the rules of our grandmothers’ – 64 of them.

Eat food is devoted to rules that help you distinguish real food from edible food-like substances. “If it came from a plant, eat it. If it was made in a plant, don’t.” “It’s not food if it’s served through the window of your car.” “It’s not food if it’s called by the same name in every language.” Think Big Mac, Cheetos or Pringles.

Mostly plants, is about making distinctions between foods, eating meat, and the kinds of foods to eat. “Eat all the junk food you want as long as you cook it yourself.” For instance, eat the French fries you love – as long as you cook it yourself, a natural deterrent that helps create balance. And his favorite rule: “The whiter the bread, the sooner you’ll be dead.”

Not too much is about the manners of eating, the cultural rules that prevent overeating, things like “Stop before you’re full,” and “Buy smaller plates and glasses.”

Thank you! says Marianne Williamson on her website, posting this open letter by Jimmy Carter, Losing My Religion for Equality, to say that he is severing his ties with the Southern Baptist Convention after years of trying to change its views over its treatment of women. Indeed! He also speaks as part of fellow global Elders Nelson Mandela, Gro Brundtland, Bishop Desmond Tutu, and other leaders deeply committed to challenging injustice. Their recently published statement declares that “the justification of discrimination against women and girls on grounds of religion or tradition, as if it were prescribed by a Higher Authority, is unacceptable.” Carter says that “Women and girls have been discriminated against for too long in a twisted interpretation of the word of God,” and that he had to take action.

… when the Convention’s leaders, quoting a few carefully selected Bible verses and claiming that Eve was created second to Adam and was responsible for original sin, ordained that women must be “subservient” to their husbands and prohibited from serving as deacons, pastors or chaplains in the military service. This view that women are somehow inferior to men is not restricted to one religion or belief. Women are prevented from playing a full and equal role in many faiths … This discrimination, unjustifiably attributed to a Higher Authority, has provided a reason or excuse for the deprivation of women’s equal rights across the world for centuries.

At its most repugnant, the belief that women must be subjugated to the wishes of men excuses slavery, violence, forced prostitution, genital mutilation and national laws that omit rape as a crime. But it also costs many millions of girls and women control over their own bodies and lives, and continues to deny them fair access to education, health, employment and influence within their own communities. ….

It is simply self-defeating for any community to discriminate against half its population. We need to challenge these self-serving and outdated attitudes and practices – as we are seeing in Iran where women are at the forefront of the battle for democracy and freedom… ”

Finding new purpose, one that supplies a meaning, is one of the main drivers of The Purpose Prize. Directed by Civic Ventures the program is now in its fifth year, giving ten awards of up to $100,000 to innovators in encore careers – people over 60 years of age who are creating new ways to solve pressing social issues, from health care to the environment, poverty to education. An encore career challenges midlifers to build a better world through a second career. It dovetails what’s sometimes called a midlife imperative – the shift from doing well to doing good – so that ’retirement’ becomes redefined as freedom to work in more flexible, meaningful ways, rather than a time to be free from work. Nominations are due March 5, 2010. Nominate yourself or someone you know.

The author celebrates five courageous women who have spoken truth to power and helped to illuminate as well as dig us out of the worst financial mess since the Great Depression. “In case you haven’t heard, women are leading the charge on financial reform,” he begins. He names:
* Yves Smith’s ‘must-read blog, Naked Capitalism” for its good overview of the financial crisis.
* Elizabeth Warren, Professor of Law at Harvard law professor, author of The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Mothers and Fathers Are Going Broke, for being a strong and energetic public advocate as head the Congressional Oversight Panel for monies being handed over to banks.
* Gretchen Morgenson, New York Times business writer, for some of the best coverage of the financial crisis in the mainstream media, including how AIG met its demise.
* Sheila Blair, head of the FDIC, for taking on Paulson, Bernanke, Geithner, and Summers, for stating repeatedly the banking crisis is not over, trying to slow foreclosures, and insisting that Citi needs to be placed into receivership.
* Meredith Whitney, head of the Meredith Whitney Advisory Group, for being “the Anti-Geithner”, appearing on CNBC to say that the Citi banks’ profits were “manufactured” by the government.

With the debut of the first ‘modern’ retirement facility in Sun City, Arizona in 1960, replete with golf courses, recreation centers and activities clubs, it’s been 50 years that Americans’ ideas have shifted about retirement. Sun City recast the idea of retirement as a non-working life of limited opportunity to one of possibility and productivity. Now a new Sun City Festival has opened, but with a difference: most people living there are either employed, active or doing some kind of community service. And they have internet cafes, continuing education classes, and lots of singles. But with more choices now, only about 6% of homeowners over 65 live in communities like these. Instead, the tide is turning to “aging in place,” to living in the house you’ve lived in for the last 20 or 30 years and to make it work there. Some 70% of seniors spend the rest of their lives in the place where they celebrated their 65th birthday.

Indeed there are many initiatives and resources for communities and individuals for aging in place, including:

Aging in Place “The “E-cyclopedia” of housing options and information for
retirement, finance, insurance and care.” An practical resource to start you thinking about what you need to know and may need to age in place.

National Aging in Place Council. A support network of collaborative professional service providers that includes home health care companies, geriatric care managers, food and product delivery services, architects, interior designers, remodeling contractors, home maintenance professionals, landscaping contractors, transportation providers, financial planners, insurance companies, elder specialists and more.

Age in Place. Assitive technology assistance on the kinds of home and lifestyle modifications you’ll need to think about – from remodeling to technology and gadgets to how to finance it.

From the overwhelming response we’ve received from you about your interest in transformational women thought leaders, and women’s spiritual growth, we’ll be actively looking to post on more events, in addition to the regular updates on conferences and retreats in our monthly newsletter. This month Carolyn Myss introduces her new book Defy Gravity: Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason with this online event. From her flyer: What is grace and how does it influence your life? Grace is a mystical substance, a divine force that makes itself known through the consequence of its presence in your life. Drawing from innovative concepts in her new book, Caroline introduces you to the seven powerful graces that have numerous expressions in your day-to-day life. They are: Reverence, Piety, Understanding, Fortitude, Counsel, Knowledge, and Wisdom. And from them flow other graces such as the grace of compassion, healing, and endurance.

The grace of Counsel, for example, is a profound grace that elevates your consciousness in situations when you need to communicate the truth to another person, the type of truth that you know will change both of your lives. Or this grace is what you call upon when you need to receive inner counsel regarding what it is you should do next with your life. These graces are provided to us as the essential ingredients of our humanness. They are the deepest and most profound power of what it means to be a spiritual being. They are meant to be utilized for personal growth and to be shared generously with others.

How do you access your graces? How do you know when you are in a field of grace? How do you recognize the presence and direct intervention of a particular grace? Caroline answers these questions and more.
