Who are Cultural Creatives?

lakeCultural Creatives are the more than 50 million – almost one third of adult Americans – and Europeans and Japanese – who care deeply about ecology, relationships, peace, social justice, self actualization, and spirituality. We are inner-directed as well as socially concerned, activists, volunteers and contributors to public life. Our impact is already proving to be enormous, shaping the new agenda in the 21st century.

In the first half of our lives, Cultural Creatives, now at midlife, led the way to integrating alternative therapies into health care,

promoting organic agriculture and healthy eating, initiating a new awareness of social responsibility in business and investment practices, as well as inspiring the green revolution. For everyone entering the second half of life, discovering new meaning and purpose takes front and center stage. Among other things, Cultural Creatives are leading the way in creating the new meme for conscious aging, pursuing encore careers

and establishing non-profits that give back to communities in innovative and empowering ways.

Sociologist Paul Ray, in his landmark 2000 study, coined the term Cultural Creatives in his book, Cultural Creatives, How 50 Million People are Changing the World, describing those of us who share a strong set of distinct common values, priorities and worldviews:

* Commitment to psychological and spiritual development
* “Feminine” values of cooperation and participatory leadership
* Distrust of large institutions and the mainstream media
* Holistic approaches in health care, and paying more for organic goods
* Concern about the health of the planet and buying green products
* Optimism about creating an alternative ‘third way’ for the future
* Dislike of the cultural emphasis on materialism and displays of status
* Enjoy travel to experience and learn about other cultures’ ways of life

Ahead of the Curve at Midlife provides resources, ideas and tools to explore and help you to create deeply satisfying and authentic ways of being and living that support these values and vision. In the second half of life, there is little that matters more.

“If I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?”
Rabbi Hillel
