Know someone tapping their experience to improve the lives of others? Finding new purpose, one that supplies a meaning, is one of the main drivers of The Purpose Prize. Directed by Civic Ventures the program is now in its fifth year, giving ten awards of up to $100,000 to innovators in encore careers – people over 60 years of age who are creating new ways to solve pressing social issues, from health care to the environment, poverty to education. An encore career challenges midlifers to build a better world through a second career. It dovetails what’s sometimes called a midlife imperative – the shift from doing well to doing good – so that ’retirement’ becomes redefined as freedom to work in more flexible, meaningful ways, rather than a time to be free from work. Nominations are due March 5, 2010. Nominate yourself or someone you know.
