Myss.Defy.GravityCarolyn Myss has done it again. This keynote describes her latest work, Defy Gravity: Healing Beyond the Bounds of Reason. She’s not talking about levitating or anti-aging treatments – but defining healing in simple and intuitive terms through mystical eyes. For several years she’s been studying the works of 16th century Spanish mystics Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross, applying their insights to what she perceives as a “crisis of reason’ – our attempt to use the rational mind to address spiritual concerns. She uses their sensibilities to borrow the notion of gravity – gravitas, that which has weight and density – to disease. Disease as something that weighs down the soul – and that we can’t reason our way out of.

Her ruminations in this lengthy talk address many things: St. John’s poem, Dark Night of the Soul, describing the soul’s journey through crisis, fear, entitlement, power, denial, safety, trying to reason your way out of crisis, losing your familiar world, following your inner voice, why people don’t heal, healing at the speed of light, and more. A lot here!

And a lot that may be germane to the dark night that we call a midlife crisis – or at least one way to describe the experience of midlife juncture. It’s worth a listen.

A heads up – she’s promoting her book which comes out this month, so this recording may not be up for the long term.
