shadow.effectSpeaking of the shadow, I love this new production,The Shadow Effect, and I celebrate Debbie Ford, author of The Dark Side of the Light Chasers and Why Good People Do Bad Things, for pulling it together with so many leading luminaries in human development and healing, including Deepak Chopra and Marianne Williamson. Inspired by Carl Jung, she pioneered the study of the shadow in modern spiritual psychology and created this docudrama showing why suppressed emotions and unresolved internal conflicts lead to behaviors we see around us all the time – the public humiliation and media meltdowns that unseat politicians, destroy celebrity careers, and destabilize society. But lest we think it only happens to public figures, it’s the very shadow that is the culprit in so-called midlife crisis. It’s that grab bag of repressed behaviors, emotions and desires that will emerge and wreak havoc in our lives and those around us. All those hidden pieces of you want a voice, and midlife is their last hurrah – unless and until we understand how it operates in our lives. The question is only when – and how. The film exposes the opposing forces of light and dark that are constantly competing for our attention.

Knowing that after viewing the film people will be compelled to act, Ford has integrated some of her most successful processes into a Special Interactive DVD Edition. Throughout the movie, which is subtitled A Journey from Your Darkest Thought to Your Greatest Dream, Ford guides you through eight exercises that help to reveal the shadow in your own life, and how to break free of its limitations.

Watch the trailer, see the movie. Download the workbook and take the quiz. And spread the word. I can’t think of anything we need more at this juncture than the message this film brings to light.
