Fewer Layoffs for Employees Over 55

bizNot so sure this is entirely good news, but unemployment rates are higher and rising faster for younger workers than for employees 55 and older. Even though older workers earn more, companies are wary of age discrimination lawsuits. Protections exist for older workers, but less so for younger employees. Younger teachers are being hit hardest despite strong performance reviews; cuts target first year teachers lowest on the totem pole. And when it’s a tie-breaker, family situations make a difference when choosing between a single 20-something and a 50-year-old employee with two kids in college. The other side of the coin of course, is that that while this may be good news for you, it may not be so good for your kids. If they need a reality check, there’s good advice here about safeguarding their job by finding ways to stay valuable.
