Here is some very straight talk about sex, gals, from Christiane Northrup, MD, author of the well-known Women’s Body, Women’s Wisdom he Wisdom of Menopause and other books on women’s health from a holistic standpoint. A long-time and passionate woman’s advocate and specialist in natural healing, we’ve come to expect Christiane to tell it like it is. And in The Secret Pleasures of Menopause she breaks some new, and sometimes surprising, ground. From the need to practice self-pleasure – what the Taoist call the Art of self-cultivation – in order to know our own bodies and what pleases us – to the news about nitric oxide, a gas vital to health and vitality that’s emitted during any pleasurable sensation – this is not your mother’s menopause! Why does the sex drive seem to fizzle with age in women? Christiane describes the libido as our life force and says that the abundance of libido – or its absence – is determined by how fully we choose to continue to stay tapped into the creative force of life. Our inner wisdom arises during perimenopause, she says, and our bodies rebel against any messages we may have received about sex being about pleasing a man. She says our bodies shut down – don’t let the life force flow – until we’ve discovered what pleases and replenishes us. On a physical level, she suggests low that libido can result from radiation, antidepressant medication, or low testosterone, which is actually a symptom of adrenal burnout. When you heal the adrenals, you don’t need nearly as much exogenous hormone therapy.
And more: the self-explanatory and intriguing The Illustrated Guide to Extended Massive Orgasm for you and your partner (anyone ‘read’ this yet and care to comment?), to learning how to think with your heart to change its beat-to-beat variability through appreciation, and to increase your DHEA levels, precursor for testosterone. And a suggestion to take up pole-dancing or the sacred art of striptease to increase self-esteem, which you can explore at Mama Gena’s School of Womanly Arts. The essential message: a turned-on woman who is having fun and enjoying her life is at her most alive and sexy, and a blessing to everyone.

I own one of Dr. Northrup’s books but I have yet to read it. I am now 50. It’s time.
Hi Rhea, you’ll be glad you did. I like her personal woman to woman style. I think it’s also a rare physician who understands and validates women’s natural intuition and body wisdom as a source of strength and wisdom we can trust. Kathleen
