Who’s Hot and Who’s Not

demiI realize I’m departing from the usual format here, but I must ask you this question. What do you think about a headline that gleefully announces that 40 Year Old Women Are WAY Hotter than 20 Year Olds? The piece alternately effuses about older women’s presence on magazine covers, from bikini-clad Valerie Bertinelli to Cindy Crawford in suds – and gloating that 20-somethings are having a hard time competing. And, lest we forget, Michelle Obama’s ubiquitous arms. Hey, I’d like to feel as youthful and sexy as I’ve ever been, but this just makes me very uncomfortable, and very sad. Do we seriously want to compete with our daughters? I’m particularly disappointed to find it in the Huffington Post, as I consider Ariana Huffington to be an articulate and enlightened spokeswoman on a number of progressive issues. At least the video snippet thrown up later casts looking good as being a nice side bennie of cultivating good eating habits and exercise. What’s the message here about what it means to be an adult? Is this a meaningful core ambition for the second half of life?
